Why a San Jose firm needs its own search plan
For a law firm, SEO is not a list of positions. It is a measured flow of calls and web enquiries from people who found the firm in Google, in Google Maps or in an AI answer, and a count of how many of those became consultations and signed cases. A page that ranks and signs nobody is a vanity number, and a firm paying a retainer deserves to know which pages bring cases and which only bring readers.
Santa Clara County gives that work a particular shape. San Jose is the county seat and its largest city, but the county has 15 incorporated cities and towns, from Palo Alto and Mountain View in the north to Morgan Hill and Gilroy in the south. A resident of Cupertino does not think of herself as searching in San Jose, and a firm near the downtown courthouses competes on a different map from a firm in Campbell. Many searchers also look north, so San Francisco firms appear in the same results.
A plan therefore starts with three facts: where your attorneys actually work, which case types pay the firm's bills, and which languages your staff answer in. Pages, profiles and links follow from those facts, and the reporting follows the case from first call to consultation, engagement letter and fee.
San Jose and Santa Clara County by the numbers
These figures come from Data USA profiles built on Census Bureau data and from the State Bar of California's 2024 Justice Gap Study. They show how many people a firm can reach, how many were born abroad and how crowded the profession already is.
- San Jose had 990,138 residents in 2024. Santa Clara County had about 1.9 million and the San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara metro about 1.97 million.
- 41.9% of San Jose residents were born outside the United States in 2024. The share was 41.5% for Santa Clara County and 40.8% for the metro.
- 30.8% of San Jose residents were Hispanic in 2024, and about 388,000 identified as Asian and not Hispanic.
- Across California, the most common birthplaces of foreign-born residents in 2024 were Mexico, the Philippines and China; Data USA reports these at state level because county and city microdata are not published.
- Median household income in 2024 was $146,427 in San Jose, $164,281 in Santa Clara County and $162,111 across the metro.
- California had 196,613 active attorneys in 2025, or 4.3 per 1,000 residents statewide. The urban parts of Santa Clara County had 5.4 per 1,000, against 1.0 per 1,000 in its rural parts.
How Silicon Valley residents search for legal help
The habits below are what we plan pages around. They describe how people put legal problems into words, not measured shares, and your own call log is the way to confirm which of them matter for your practice.
The employer, the road and the courthouse
Few people search for a practice area by its textbook name. They type what happened and where it happened: laid off after reporting harassment, overtime not paid at a Milpitas warehouse, crash on 101 near the Tully exit, DUI stop in Los Gatos, custody hearing in San Jose. Some name the company they worked for. The city matters because it suggests which courthouse and which agency will be involved, and people assume a nearby lawyer knows them. Pages built around the situation and the city match these searches far better than one page for the whole state.
Valley cities, not only San Jose
Residents of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View or Milpitas often add their own city to a search rather than San Jose. Google's map results lean towards offices near the person searching, so a single profile downtown rarely shows for a caller in Palo Alto. Firms with staffed offices in more than one city should have a profile and a set of pages for each; firms with one office should write city pages only where they have real clients and real knowledge to share.
Vietnamese, Spanish, Chinese and more
With roughly two in five residents born abroad, many San Jose families look for a lawyer in a language other than English, or ask a younger relative to search for them. The county's Registrar of Voters held workshops in 14 languages for the November 2025 special election, a fair sign of how many language communities a valley firm may hear from. A search in Vietnamese or Spanish usually meets far fewer law firm pages than the same search in English.
On a phone, after a shift
Most of these searches happen on a phone, many of them after the working day, when the caller finally has time to deal with the problem. Commute hours on 280 and 880 and late evenings matter. A page that loads slowly, hides the phone number or sends the caller to voicemail at 7 pm loses the case to the next result, however well it ranks.
The First Street courthouses and the agencies around them
People search for the place named on their paperwork. Plain guides to those places, reviewed by your attorneys, meet that search and give the reader a reason to call. The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, lists the courthouses below on its locations page.
Downtown Superior Court and the Old Courthouse
Civil, probate and small claims matters are heard at the Downtown Superior Court at 191 North First Street, and more civil departments sit in the Old Courthouse at 161 North First Street. Injury, employment and contract clients meet these buildings when a case is filed, so a page explaining what happens at a case management conference or a first civil hearing there is worth writing.
Hall of Justice on West Hedding Street
Criminal cases in San Jose go to the Hall of Justice at 190 West Hedding Street. A defense firm's pages can explain the first appearance, what the arraignment notice means and how to find the right department, which are the questions families search for the night after an arrest.
Family Justice Center Courthouse
Family law, juvenile dependency, drug court and traffic matters are heard at the Family Justice Center Courthouse at 201 North First Street, which also hosts self-help services. Divorce and custody clients search for that address, and a guide to a first hearing there fits a family practice's site naturally.
Palo Alto, Morgan Hill and the juvenile court
The Palo Alto Courthouse on Grant Avenue hears criminal matters for the north county, and the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse on Diana Avenue hears criminal and traffic cases for the south. Juvenile justice matters go to the Juvenile Justice Courthouse on Guadalupe Parkway. The court lists the Santa Clara Courthouse as temporarily closed, so old pages that still send readers there need correcting.
Immigration hearings after the San Francisco closure
Santa Clara County has no immigration court of its own. The Executive Office for Immigration Review said in a notice of 1 May 2026 that the San Francisco Immigration Court would close at the close of business on 4 September 2026, with its Sansome Street location becoming a hearing location under the Concord Immigration Court and reassigned cases heard in Concord or remotely. Families from San Jose now search for where their hearing will be, and immigration pages written before the change can send them to the wrong place. We date these pages and recheck the EOIR notices each quarter.
Workers' compensation and wage claims on Airport Parkway
The Division of Workers' Compensation runs its San Jose district office at 224 Airport Parkway, Suite 600, and the Labor Commissioner's San Jose office is in the same building, in Suite 300. Injured workers and unpaid employees search for both. Pages that explain the difference between a workers' compensation claim and a wage claim, and when a lawyer helps with each, bring better qualified calls than a generic workplace page.
What California's lawyer advertising rules mean for a web page
A firm website, a Business Profile post and a directory listing are all communications about legal services. In California they sit under Chapter 7 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, in force since 1 November 2018, and under the lawyer advertising sections of the Business and Professions Code. We are not ethics counsel and give no legal advice. What we provide is a publishing routine that puts each page in front of your counsel before launch and keeps a dated copy afterwards.
Truthful in every claim and every implication
Rule 7.1 bars a false or misleading communication about a lawyer or the lawyer's services. Section 6157.2 lists content an advertisement must leave out, among it any promise that a matter will succeed and any suggestion that the lawyer usually obtains quick cash or fast settlements, and it limits award claims to awards not handed out simply for membership or for a fee. On injury sites the trouble usually hides in badge strips and in phrases like we always win, which we take off the page unless your counsel clears them.
A named lawyer and office behind each page
Rule 7.2(c) asks each advertising communication to carry the name and address of at least one lawyer or firm responsible for it, and section 6157.2 asks for a responsible California lawyer or firm and the city, town or county of a bona fide office. The site footer normally covers this. Landing pages, profile posts and campaign pages built by past vendors often do not, and we check every one.
Specialist wording
Under Rule 7.4 a lawyer may describe a field the firm practises in or concentrates on, but may claim to be a certified specialist only while currently certified by the State Bar's Board of Legal Specialization or another accredited body, which the page must name. Attorney bios are where this slips, so we match each claim to a certificate before the page goes live.
Solicitation and follow-up messages
Rule 7.3 limits live solicitation and asks targeted written or electronic solicitations to be marked as advertising, with exceptions such as people the lawyer already knows. The texts and emails intake sends to callers who did not book are where firms most often get this wrong, because they are written in a hurry. We draft them with the rule in mind and send them to counsel like any page.
A copy of every version
Section 6159.1 requires a true copy of each advertisement to be kept for one year. Section 6157.2 also gives a consumer misled by a non-compliant advertisement a route to sue after a State Bar process, with statutory damages per advertisement. A dated archive of every page version, with the approving attorney's name, answers both provisions, and it is part of every programme we run.
Recording tracked calls under Penal Code section 632
Call tracking gives each page, office and campaign its own number, so the firm can see which page produced which call and which calls became cases. Many tracking platforms also record calls, often by default, and recordings are useful when you review how intake handles a nervous caller.
California makes that feature a legal question. Penal Code section 632 makes it an offence to record a confidential communication, including a telephone call, without the consent of all parties, and a call to a law firm about a legal problem is about as confidential as calls get. A tracking set-up copied from an agency's template for another state can start recording without telling anyone.
Our default is simple. Every recorded line opens with a short spoken notice before the call connects, we test each line by calling it, and lines for the most sensitive matters, such as criminal defense or immigration detention calls, can run without recording if your counsel prefers. Your counsel approves the final set-up and the wording of the notice.
Paid leads, directories and the referral rules
Many valley firms buy directory placements, pay-per-lead platforms or shared intake services next to their own SEO. Rule 7.2(b) bars a lawyer from giving anything of value for recommending or securing the lawyer's services, with exceptions that include the reasonable cost of permitted advertising and the usual charges of a legal services plan or a qualified lawyer referral service.
Business and Professions Code section 6155 goes further: no one may run a service that refers potential clients to attorneys, and attorneys may not accept its referrals, unless the State Bar has certified it. Local options exist; the Santa Clara County Bar Association, for example, runs a lawyer referral service online. Before any paid source enters the channel report, we ask your counsel whether it is advertising or referral, and we judge it on cost per signed case rather than lead count.
Employment law: the valley's own search pattern
In a county built around large technology employers and the warehouses, campuses and service jobs around them, many legal searches begin with work. Callers describe a layoff they suspect was targeted, a termination after medical or pregnancy leave, retaliation after a complaint, unpaid overtime or missed meal breaks. Many hold equity they fear losing, and many are on a work visa that ties their status to the job, which makes the call urgent.
Two agencies shape what these pages should explain. The California Civil Rights Department takes employment discrimination complaints, and its own guidance says an intake form must be submitted within three years of the date the person was last harmed, and that anyone who wants to skip its investigation must get a right-to-sue notice before filing in court. The Labor Commissioner's San Jose office handles wage claims. Pages that explain these routes clearly, without judging whether a reader has a claim, earn calls from people who have done some reading and are ready to talk.
We write employment pages by situation and by city, keep any comment on a specific employer out of the copy unless your attorneys approve it, and make sure the page tells readers that deadlines exist without promising what a claim is worth.
Other case types and the searches behind them
Each practice area has its own vocabulary and its own deadlines. The notes below are planning guidance, and every deadline on a published page is checked by your attorneys against the current law.
Car, motorcycle and pedestrian crashes
San Jose recorded 41 traffic deaths on city streets in 2025, down from 49 in 2024 and the lowest figure since 2012, with pedestrian deaths roughly even at 20, according to San Jose Spotlight. Crash searches name the road: 101, 280, 880, 87, Capitol Expressway, Story Road or Monterey Road. Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1 allows two years for an injury action, and Government Code section 911.2 requires a claim against a public entity to be presented within six months, which matters for crashes involving VTA buses or light rail and city or county vehicles.
Workers' compensation
Injured workers search after a claim is denied, after treatment is delayed or after checks stop. Pages built around the San Jose district office, the claim form and what happens at a first hearing serve them better than a general overview of the system.
Immigration
Immigration searches in San Jose mix family cases, removal defense and employment-based questions from workers on visas. Families often search in Vietnamese, Spanish or Chinese; employment-based questions usually come in English from people who have read a lot already. Separate pages for each audience, dated and rechecked against EOIR and USCIS notices, keep both groups from bouncing.
Divorce, custody and property
Family Code section 760 makes property acquired during a marriage while living in California community property, except as otherwise provided by statute. In the valley, the property questions readers bring often involve stock options, restricted stock and vesting schedules. How those are divided is for your attorneys to explain; our job is to make sure the firm's guide is the one a worried spouse in Cupertino or Willow Glen finds and trusts enough to call.
Criminal defense and DUI
Defense searches are urgent and local: a DUI stop in Campbell, a domestic violence arrest in Milpitas, a first appearance at the Hall of Justice or at the Palo Alto Courthouse. Pages that name the right courthouse, explain the next 48 hours plainly and put a phone number that is answered at night at the top do most of the work.
Language pages that match who answers the phone
A Vietnamese or Spanish page is a promise that someone at the firm can talk to the reader in that language. Breaking it costs more than having no page at all, because the caller who reaches an English-only voicemail rarely calls back. We publish a language page only when an attorney or intake staff member takes those calls, and we give each language its own tracked line so the firm can see what each page produces.
Machine translation is not enough for legal pages. Every translated page is checked by a fluent attorney or staff member at the firm, keeps the same California disclosures as the English page and carries its own approval date in the archive. Where the firm serves Tagalog, Korean, Hindi, Punjabi or another community, the same rule applies.
Language pages can be an early win. Fewer firms publish them, so a well-built page in Vietnamese or Spanish can reach page one for its city long before the English head terms move.
What we build, page by page
The work is a set of assets the firm keeps. Each piece below is approved by your attorneys and archived with its date.
Practice pages by city and courthouse
One page per practice area for each city where the firm has clients, written around the situations people describe and the courthouse or agency their case will involve, with the phone number and booking link above the fold.
A Business Profile for each staffed office
A complete Google Business Profile for every office your people work from, with categories, hours, photos from the office and services that match the practice pages. No profiles for virtual or shared addresses that Google's guidelines rule out.
Attorney pages
A page for each attorney listing admissions, education, languages spoken, the case types they handle and any certification they hold, with the certifying body named. These pages back up the practice pages, and AI answers and directories often draw on them.
Answer pages
Short pages answering the questions intake hears every week, such as how long someone has to bring a discrimination complaint, what happens at a first hearing at the Family Justice Center, or what to do after a crash with a VTA bus. Each links to the practice page that signs the case.
Listings
Matching name, address and phone details on Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and the main legal directories, with paid placements judged on cost per signed case and checked against Rule 7.2(b) and section 6155.
Reviews under federal and California rules
Reviews influence which firm in the map results gets the call, and two sets of rules apply. The Federal Trade Commission's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, in effect since 21 October 2024, prohibits fake reviews, reviews bought on condition of a positive sentiment and the suppression of negative ones. California's Rule 7.1 and section 6157.2 add that a testimonial can mislead if it leads readers to expect the same result, and a dramatised story has to be disclosed as one.
Our review routine follows from that. A request goes out after a matter closes, never with an incentive tied to a positive review. Replies to reviews never confirm that the reviewer was a client and never discuss a matter. Testimonials on the site carry the context your counsel asks for.
Intake: the step that decides whether SEO pays
Much of what a firm spends on SEO can be lost after the click. In Clio's 2024 secret shopper study of 500 firms, as summarised by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism, 40% answered the phone and 33% replied to email. Every unanswered call from a page the firm paid to build is a case handed to the next result.
So the first months include test calls to every tracked line after hours and at weekends, in each language the firm advertises, and a log of what happened. Month 7 adds online booking by case type and language, with conflict-check fields, and same-day callback rules for arrests, detentions, terminations and new crash calls.
We also ask intake to tag each call with an outcome: no case, conflict, booked or signed. Those tags turn the monthly report from a traffic chart into a measure of which pages sign cases.
Picking an SEO partner for a San Jose firm
A short set of questions sorts agencies quickly. Ask them in the first meeting and listen for specific answers.
Questions to ask before you sign
Will analytics, call tracking and every profile sit in the firm's own accounts? How do you handle recording on tracked lines in California? Who checks pages against Rules 7.1 to 7.5 and section 6157.2, and how is each version kept? Which cities would you build pages for first, and why those? What will the monthly report show besides rankings and traffic? How do you judge a lead platform before the firm pays for it?
Warning signs
Any one of these is a reason to ask harder questions before signing.
- Promised rankings, case counts or fees
- Profiles proposed for addresses where nobody works
- Recorded call tracking with no mention of consent
- Specialist wording or award badges nobody at the firm can document
- Translated pages with no fluent reviewer
- Reports that stop at traffic and never reach signed cases
What law firm SEO costs in San Jose
Vendor price guides give a broad range. On The Map Marketing puts law firm SEO at $3,000 to $15,000 a month, and 12AM Agency (updated Jul 2026) gives $3,500 to $6,500 a month for mid-size metros and $7,000 to $12,000+ for hyper-competitive cities. Both are agencies selling the service, so read their figures as market context, not as independent research.
We quote San Jose at our US major metro rate, from $7,000 a month by proposal. 12AM does not name San Jose, so the placement is our judgment: a metro of about 1.97 million people whose legal searches local firms, San Francisco firms, national directories and injury advertisers all compete for. Firms outside the major metros are priced on our US page at $4,500 a month for personal injury and family law and $3,500 for criminal defense and immigration.
There is a three-month minimum, because the first three months go on tracking, profiles and page structure. Ad spend and directory or lead platform fees are paid by the firm straight to the provider and sit outside the retainer, and no proposal includes a ranking, case or fee guarantee.
How the first year unfolds
The order below is the usual one. Every firm's starting point differs, and the plan on this page lets you test your own numbers.
- Months 0 to 1: tracking, recording notices, the intake log, test calls and repairs to the pages that already take calls
- Months 2 to 3: a profile for each staffed office and practice pages by city and courthouse
- Months 4 to 6: language pages, answer pages, reviews and the first links from valley sources
- Months 7 to 9: online booking, Local Services Ads compared with organic on cost per signed case, the next city or practice
- Months 10 to 12: AI answer checks, intake revisions and the year two plan
What slows it down
Slow attorney approvals, profiles suspended over address problems, old directory listings with different phone numbers, and recorded lines that have to be rebuilt are the usual delays. City-wide head terms take longest; long-tail city, courthouse and language queries usually move first.
A monthly report a managing partner can use
The report fits on one page and starts with cases, not traffic. Each figure is compared with month 0.
- Calls and web enquiries from organic search, by city, practice and language
- Missed calls by hour and line
- Consultations booked and cases signed from organic
- Cost per signed case for organic and for paid channels
- Map positions on a grid around each office
- Pages approved, published and archived that month
- Whether AI answers name the firm for its practice, city and language
The law firm SEO services hub sets out the method we follow in every market. The pages below cover our wider US programme and services that can run alongside a San Jose programme or on their own.
Wrapping up
People who need a lawyer in Santa Clara County search under pressure, usually on a phone, often after work and often in a language other than English. They call the firm that names their city and courthouse, explains the next step, follows California's rules and picks up when they ring. SEO is the work of making your firm one of the few they find, and of measuring which pages turn into signed cases.
To see where your firm stands, look at our pricing above and book a 30-minute strategy call. You leave with a starting point for your organic calls and consultations whether or not you hire us, and we make no ranking, case or fee guarantees.
